Photomultiplier tubes

The photomultiplier tubes currently used by the TileCal are the 10-stages R5900 Hamamatsu photomultipliers. These PMTs have been developed with the manufacturer and are now commercially available. A new generation with 8 stages is under development.

Characteristics of the Hamamatsu R5900:

For the 1996 test beam, 65 PMTs have been bought to Hamamatsu. Actually, 46 of these PMTs were used in the Module 0. You will find here a characterization of the 65 PMTs, concerning relative photocathode sensitivity, dark current and current amplification measurements.
