The polishing machine is equipped with a video camera (photo
, specifications)
connected to a monitor
Philips LTC2814/50. In this way it is possible to control the polishing
quality on-line, see photos:
The machine is also equipped with a vacuum cleaning system to be
connected to a vacuum cleaner to remove the dust from inside the girder.
The machine will be delivered to the instrumentation sites full
equiped except the monitor and vacuum cleaner.
Quantity: 4
machines, one for each instrumentation site + replacing pieces. 10 diamond
tools will be ordered to Amplex (US) . 5 pieces were already ordered and
will arrive at the end of August. The delivery time is 6 weeks. The price
per diamond piece is 568 USD (here
you find the offer). The remaining 5 will be ordered later.
Current status and description
-
The polishing machine consists of two parts: the cutting and polishing
tools. At the input and output of the girder there are buffers with a cable
drive system to allow the insertion and the control of the machine. The
first machine has been sent to CERN at the end of March and tested there.
Particular attention has been paid to the test of the air cleaning head
installed on the plate of the polishing machine. Now at CERN there is the
complete equipment for CB polishing work which includes the cutting tool
and the polishing tool. The latter equipped with a compressed air cleaning
head, a video camera for QC and the buffers with cable drive system.

Recently some measurements have been done at YERPHI for the light transmission
through the diamond-cut bundle surface, showing around 97-98% in transparency
as compared to subsequently polished sample. These numbers agreed with
the 95% transparency measured in 1994, when sapphire knifes were used.
-
It has been evaluated that the total time consumption for the cutting and
polishing operations, particularly for the CB modules, is rather high,
coming partly from the closure of the access to the girder inner part,
that makes difficult to perform both cutting and polishing operations within
the instrumentation schedule. Taking into account the machines construction
tight schedule and the transparency results we agreed with M. Nessi to
construct at first the cutting tools and the tool-plates of the polishing
tools, equipped with air cleaning head and video. It is proposed to make
the fine polishing later, just before the drawers installation. On the
other hand, it is clear that the polishing paste will not be fully cleaned
out and partly will remain between the fibers if the glue filling is not
good. The expected consequences are not known, so the decision on the polishing
should be done later.
